On paper, the US constitution is a thing of beauty. But the would-be emperor in Washington has revealed its great weakness

America’s big birthday has come at a bad time. On Saturday it will be a divided nation that marks 250 years since 13 North American colonies declared their independence from the Great Britain of George III. Many will be anxious that the republic they established that day is fragile – not least because of the would-be emperor in the White House.

Some will console themselves that hope and angst have always been intertwined in the American story. From the very start, confidence in a bright, exceptional US future was combined with foreboding and doubt. At the close of the 1787 constitutional convention, a woman approached one of the founding fathers, Benjamin Franklin, to ask if the delegates had established a monarchy or a republic. Franklin’s answer: “A republic, if you can keep it.”

Ministro da Fazenda diz que 'interferência' dos EUA preocupa governo O ministro da Fazenda, Dario Durigan, disse nesta sexta-feita (3) em entrevista exclusiva ao g1 que os alvos das sanções aplicadas pelos Estados Unidos por suposta ligação com facções criminosas já estavam sendo investigados no Brasil "há um tempo" e que a "interferência" da gestão de Donald Trump preocupa. A Polícia Federal (PF) fez hoje uma operação para desarticular uma organização criminosa especializada na lavagem de dinheiro proveniente do tráfico internacional de drogas. Ao todo, a PF expediu 11 mandados de prisão temporária. Entre os presos está Stella Stefanie Nunes Henrique de Oliveira, que na última quarta-feira (1º) foi sancionada pelos EUA por suposto vículo com o Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC). O empresário Victor Henrique de Oliveira Shimada, também alvo de sanções do governo americano, está entre os procurados pela PF, mas está foragido. "Essas empresas já estavam sendo investigadas no Brasil, pela Polícia Federal, pela Receita [Federal]. A gente já sabia, não tem novidade. Hoje mesmo a polícia faz uma operação, quer dizer que a investigação já estava em curso há um tempo", disse Durigan. Essa foi a primeira rodada de sanções econômicas divulgadas pelos EUA contra alvos que acreditam ter relação com facções criminosas após classificá-las como grupos terroristas internacionais, em junho. "Essas organizações são, de fato, muito ruins e causam terror social no Brasil. E aí, o que a gente fica com dúvida, tanto nós, quanto a população brasileira, é o que será feito com isso. E esse espaço de ataque, esse espaço de interferência dos Estados Unidos no Brasil, sem que a gente saiba exatamente o que se pretende com isso, é o que nos preocupa", afirmou o ministro da Fazenda. De acordo com o ministro, o Brasil está aberto a fornecer informações sobre indivíduos suspeitos de envolvimento com as facções criminosas, mas espera, em contrapartida, que os Estados Unidos forneçam informações aos investigadores brasileiros. "Nesses casos de agora, especificamente, houve troca de informações. A própria autoridade brasileira informou ao governo dos Estados Unidos o que se passava aqui. Instead it was the one of the hug, first between Kylian Mbappé and Didier Deschamps, and then with the rest of the squad too, as they celebrated the opening goal of their 3-0 last 32 victory over Sweden in a purposeful manner.

Deschamps said later that Mbappé’s dash towards the technical area had “touched me deeply”. The head coach had briefly stepped back from his duties the week before to grieve the loss of his mother. Mbappé and the squad had wanted publicly to show how much he meant to them. “The group is united,” Deschamps said. “They delivered when I was away and now I’m back, they know I’m here 100%. Team spirit doesn’t win you matches but it can help you lose them. The collective strength is above everything and Kylian is the best shining example.”
