Two years ago, Katie White set up Enough, which distributes self-swabbing rape kits. These are DIY kits that people who believe they have been raped or sexually assaulted can use at home by collecting DNA and posting it to a private laboratory for analysis.

White was responding to a few stark facts about sexual violence in England and Wales: of more than 70,000 rapes reported to police in 2021-22, only 2,223 resulted in charges. The number of reports was only a fraction of rapes anyway: 83% of survivors choose not to go to the police.

A Useful Ghost review – exhilarating black comedy summons ghosts of Thai past via a haunted hoover

Ratchapoom Boonbunchachoke’s stylish and unique movie features an unquiet spirit that inhabits a vacuum cleaner, before political interests intervene

Here is a stylish and exhilaratingly confident debut from 39-year-old Thai film-maker Ratchapoom Boonbunchachoke, which won the critics’ week grand prize at Cannes last year. It is a supernatural black-comic fantasy of national grief executed with passion and panache, about the ghosts who have refused their afterlife confinement after the country’s succeeding catastrophes: the bloody results of a military crackdown in 2010, coup d’etats in 2006 and 2014, and before them, the 1976 Thammasat University demonstrations, along with loved ones that went to an unquiet grave of their own.

A Useful Ghost is heartfelt and elegant in its compositional flair; dreamlike tableaux are crisply juxtaposed in the edit and the whole effect is disquieting, erotic and terribly sad. It’s in some ways a humorous twist on the serious spiritual realities laid out in the movies of Thai master Joe Weerasethakul, like Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives and Cemetery of Splendour. And you might also sense the spectral shimmer of western films like Ghost and Truly, Madly, Deeply.

Some social media users claim they get a horrible sinking feeling called ‘post-gossip clarity’ after dishing the dirt. May I suggest they try harder?

Many phrases sound more elegant in French and post-coital tristesse is one of them. The English version is direct to the point of rudeness: post-nut clarity. This phenomenon, much discussed on social media, isn’t exactly the sadness à la Française, it’s more the sudden clear-headedness and, often, sense of regret men experience after climax, once the dopamine and arousal chemicals have crashed and their prefrontal cortex – responsible for logic and reasoning – is back online. It’s a calm, rational, remorseful view of the situation.

Now, there is a new offshoot of this sensation for 2026: post-gossip clarity. Ugh! Also originating on socials, it is that horrible, sinking feeling you get when the buzz has worn off after a particularly juicy goss sesh, especially if you got carried away and spilled a little too much tea. This is easily done, especially if you have fully committed to the conversation, which you always should when blessed with killer info.

Yellow Pine by Claire Vaye Watkins review – messy portrait of protest subculture

Watkins should have been the ideal writer for this sympathetic take on new age spirituality and desert eco-activism – but the results are confusing

Rose, the protagonist of Claire Vaye Watkins’s latest novel, has retreated from the world to live in Nothingness Flats, a cinder-block cabin in the Nevada desert. On indefinite leave from her job at an environmental organisation, Rose works on her Al-Anon recovery, goes hiking and joins protests against the Yellow Pine of the title: a solar array being built over a fragile desert ecosystem. She writes in her journal: “I am on this side of the portal. I have compassion in my heart for anyone back on the other side, sending emails, bickering, buying useless shit, getting run by the algorithm, living in the past.” As the story begins, she is reunited with her first love, Miles, who has “fallen apart beautifully: bopped in and out of law school, then spent six years in what’s left of the redwoods reading horny 400-year-old poems before bailing on his PhD”. Soon, Rose realises what she truly wants, this side of the portal, is to have his child.

You don’t often see a sympathetic take on the subculture of 21st-century hippies, with their eclectic leftwing philosophies, new age spirituality and earnest striving to do good and be kind. It’s an important strain in modern life, and one typically dismissed with facile mockery and condescension. As a serious treatment of it, Yellow Pine has notable strengths. The love story between Rose and Miles is very real and specific to this world, and gives a backbone of plot to material that otherwise tends to sprawl. Watkins’s prose can be musical and keenly attentive, and she excels at conveying starry-eyed love. “[Miles] was brilliant, peaceful, grounded as a mountain, kind even when he was blue, an unabashed loner agog at the whole burning world.”
